Meet Shamara: Swap Society Ambassador & Sustainable Fashion Advocate

Meet Shamara, a Swap Society Ambassador and community-minded mom, licensed minister, creative, and advocate for helping others express themselves with confidence. Based in the Elk Grove community, Shamara brings her love of creativity, sewing, and helping others into her passion for clothing swaps, sustainable fashion, and circular fashion.
For Shamara, clothing swaps are about more than refreshing your wardrobe. They’re an opportunity to bring people together, share what we have, make fashion more accessible, and give clothing a second life. Get to know Shamara and learn why she believes swapping can create a more connected and sustainable community.
What inspired you to partner with us as a Swap Society Ambassador for this clothing swap initiative?
What inspired me was the sustainability of being able to bring the community together to swap clothes instead of throwing away and buying new clothes.
Why do you think clothing swaps or circular fashion are important for the community?
For me, I think it's important for the community to swap and circulate clothes because the economy is very bad right now and it's hard to go shopping and to buy new things. This is a way to bring people closer together and keep everyone happy because new clothes whether they are brand new or exchanged is an amazing feeling for both parties.
How do you approach styling, and what advice would you give people looking to refresh their wardrobe through secondhand or swapped pieces?
The way I approach styling is to be yourself to go outside of the box that you have and be comfortable enough to not let somebody dim your light, because they don't understand how you wear your clothes. One way I would help people is to have them understand their bodies and their body type, and their mental and where they are when it comes to wearing clothes And what is comfortable and what is good for their lifestyle and pace of living.
What’s one simple tip you’d share to encourage more sustainable habits locally?
One tip I would share is be open to giving to the people who you see are struggling. So in a sense, if you see somebody that you love or that you care about with a smaller wardrobe than you, that admires your wardrobe and is in the same size as you. And they see something that you wear, and they like it to be open to letting them borrow it or even have it so that they can see and expand their wardrobe as well.
Any message for our community?
I'm excited to get to know everybody in the community and be a helping hand and an open mind.
